In 2019 Julie entered The Hand and Lock Prize for Embroidery, Textile Open. The brief ‘Fool the Senses’.

Julie’s entry piece was a large free machine embroidered drawing titled ‘A Couple on the Tube’. The drawing was made to challenge her fear of drawing people. Using an opportunistic photograph taken on the London Tube, Julie set to recreate complex textures that included aged skin, impenetrable expressions, old leather, corduroy fabric, ceramic tiles, metal, glass and transparent plastic. The complex manipulation of threads into art challenged her making throughout.

In a glittering prize evening, Julie was awarded ‘3rd Place’ for the Textile Art: Open Category.
